Tina Biss, BM BS, FRCPath, MD, is Consultant Haematologist at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom where she is the Clinical Lead for Paediatric Haemostasis, Thrombosis and Anticoagulation. She is also the Clinical Lead for the Non-malignant Haematology Research Team.
She has been trained in both adult and paediatric haematology and completed a post-graduate Doctorate of Medicine (MD) with a thesis on the influence of pharmacogenetic factors on warfarin response in children.
Dr Biss has served on many national and international panels, leading to the publication of numerous guidelines and recommendations papers. She is currently a member of the British Society for Haematology (BSH) Haemostasis & Thrombosis Guidelines Task Force. She has contributed to working groups including those that have focused on management and research in paediatric pulmonary embolism and, incidental venous thromboembolism in children. She has also supervised post-graduate psychology students performing qualitative research into the adolescent experience of thrombosis and anticoagulation.
Dr Biss has considerable experience of interventional trials in therapeutic areas including adult and paediatric anticoagulation, paediatric haemophilia and adult/paediatric immune thrombocytopenia. She has been the UK Co-ordinating Investigator for Phase II and Phase III studies of rivaroxaban in the management of children with venous thrombosis (EINSTEIN Junior studies) and is currently enrolling patients into a Phase III study of apixaban in the management of children with a venous thromboembolic event (CANINES Study).
